Incisional Hernia

Incisional hernias can be seen close to or throughout surgical scars in the abdomen. Although they don’t usually bring forth serious problems, they can be irritating. There two different treatment techniques to repair incisional hernias which are open surgery or minimally invasive surgery. “Keyhole surgery” is another naming of minimally invasive surgery and if the surgery performed on the abdomen, it is called as “laparoscopic” surgery.

It varies according to the size of the hernia, if it is small, the time will take less, if it is large, the time may be longer to recover.

If the intestine is incarcerated or strangulated, it becomes urgent, otherwise, it is not urgent.

During surgery, a patch suitable for human body is placed on the hernia area.

How painful is incisional hernia repair?

It is not so painful. However, the hospital stay may take longer according to the size of the hernia and seriousness of the procedure.

Cautıons

*Rotate ice packs or bags of frozen peas to help with swelling, up to 15 minutes per hour, for first 3 days. *If you have glue on incisions, this is waterproof and you may shower. If you have bandage(s), keep dry for three days, after which you may shower and change the dressing(s) daily with dry gauze and tape. *Climbing stairs is okay. Walking is encouraged. No strenuous activity, lifting over 20 lbs, sexual intercourse, or other forms of exercise at least until your post-op visit.*

1-3 days hospitalisation is needed.
